A discounted MacBook Air isn't worth much if…

A discounted MacBook Air is not very useful if you find out after the purchase that you missed the promotional gift card or that you paid full price because you didn’t validate your student status in time. To make the most of the Apple Education program in France, you need to understand two distinct mechanisms that work in parallel, and especially know when one ends.

Ongoing Education Discount and Back to School Bonus: two programs not to be confused

Apple offers students an Education price available year-round on Mac and iPad through the Apple Education Store. This price reduces the catalog price in a fixed manner, without any time period conditions.

The Back to School program, on the other hand, works differently. It is a temporary promotion that adds an Apple gift card with the purchase of an eligible Mac or iPad. In France, the 2026 offer allows you to receive up to 120 euros in gift cards, but it ends on October 22, 2026. After this date, the Education price remains available, but the gift card bonus disappears.

In practical terms, you can buy a MacBook Air at the Education price in December and save on the price. However, if you also want the gift card, you need to place your order before the deadline. Many students discovering Apple Education offers for students think that the gift card is a permanent benefit, which leads to unpleasant surprises in November.

UNiDAYS Validation and Eligibility: what really blocks orders

The most common friction point is not the price, but access to the store. To order online at the Education price, Apple relies on the UNiDAYS platform to verify student status. You create an account, provide proof of enrollment, and validation opens access to the dedicated store.

Where it gets tricky: verification times vary by institution. Some universities are recognized immediately, while others take several days. If you wait until the start of the school year to initiate the process and also aim for the Back to School offer, you risk missing the promotional window.

Case of new admits and parents

Apple’s recent rules explicitly include new admits to higher education, even before the first day of classes. A high school student accepted via Parcoursup can thus access the Education price as early as summer, provided they have proof of admission.

Parents purchasing for an eligible student are also covered by the program. In practice, the student must validate their status via UNiDAYS, then the parent can place the order. In a physical Apple Store, verification can be done on-site with documentation, which bypasses the UNiDAYS delay.

Choosing between Mac and iPad at the Education price: concrete criteria by field

The reduced price applies to Macs and iPads, but not to iPhones. The question remains which device to choose, as the discount does not justify an unsuitable purchase for your courses.

  • Fields that require heavy software (architecture with SketchUp or Shapr3D, development with Xcode, video editing) clearly lean towards a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air with sufficient memory. An iPad, even Pro, does not replace a native compilation environment.
  • Literary, legal, or humanities fields work very well with an iPad Air paired with an Apple Pencil. Handwritten note-taking, PDF annotation, and portability in lecture halls are concrete daily advantages.
  • Students in business or management schools juggling spreadsheets, presentations, and collaborative work often find a good compromise with an entry-level MacBook Air, whose Education price makes it more accessible than an equivalent laptop in battery life.

Feedback varies on this point, but an iPad alone does not cover all the needs of a technical curriculum. If the budget allows, the duo of MacBook plus iPad fully exploits the Apple ecosystem (Handoff, AirDrop, Sidecar to use the iPad as a second screen).

Apple Education Gift Card: how to use it without wasting it

The gift card obtained through Back to School is valid on the Apple Store, App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, and other Apple services. You cannot use it to refund part of the initial purchase, but it can be used to finance accessories or subscriptions.

High-yield uses for a student

Applying the gift card to an AppleCare+ subscription protects the device throughout the duration of studies, avoiding a high repair bill in case of damage. This is probably the most cost-effective use if you transport your Mac or iPad every day.

The other relevant option: financing an Apple Pencil or an adapter. These accessories are rarely included in bundled offers, and the gift card covers a significant part of their price.

What to avoid: spending the gift card on impulsive purchases in the App Store in the days following. It does not expire quickly, so it’s better to save it for a real need that will arise during the semester.

The Apple Education program combines a permanent price and a seasonal promotion that overlap only a few months a year. Validating your UNiDAYS status before summer and ordering during the Back to School window remains the only way to combine both benefits. The gift card, well used on AppleCare+ or a durable accessory, turns a one-time discount into savings over several years of study.
